Niente male questo Barzin alla fine. La prima volta che ho ascoltato ‘Notes To An Absent Lover’ non mi ha trasmesso granché. Forse non ero troppo concentrato, forse semplicemente non è un album a presa rapida e richiede pazienza a chi ci si dedica. Dopo qualche ulteriore seduta il disco è entrato decisamente nelle mie corde, sia i pezzi più diretti (ma non epidermici, quest’album non contiene spunti superficiali) sia quelli più introspettivi e lenti. Dubito che diventerà uno dei miei dischi dell’anno ma resta un’opera molto pregevole e interessante. Tante recensioni positive intercettate un po’ ovunque, ma nessuna che riporti il nome di Josh Haden tra i potenziali riferimenti per il cantautore canadese. Eppure chi conosce lo stile unico degli Spain non potrà non vedere evocato il fantasma di dischi come ‘The Blue Moods of Spain’ o ‘I Believe’ nei solchi di queste dondolanti riflessioni sull’amore mai sbocciato e sulle sue molteplici implicazioni nella sfera di una continua e febbrile ispirazione. Un lavoro personalissimo intriso di un retrogusto romantico mai banale, che Barzin ha saputo ricreare con bravura anche dal vivo. Live elegante, raccolto, raffinato, pacato. Peccato per l’acustica che non ha reso a pieno la gamma di sfumature della fantastica slide di Nick Zubeck.
